Scripture uses many words to describe the mental anguish, sorrow, and depression that can oppress us in this life. Whether caused by sin, suffering or some other source, depression can take a lifetime to overcome, if we do not understand how to take control over our own emotions. Many live their entire lives in bondage, unaware they can be victorious over oppression.
Following are words used in Scripture to describe feelings of depression, and instances of their use in the Bible. Parallel to this list, in the right column, are eight steps to overcoming depression.

thlibo (v), "to press; to distress; to trouble"
"Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few ... find it." Matt. 7:14
"And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation." 2 Corin 1:6
"We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair" 2 Corin 4:8
"... we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears." 2 Corin 7:5
"... we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know." 1 Thess. 3:4
"Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you" 2 Thess 1:6
"Well reported of for good works; if she have ... lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work." 1 Tim 5:10
"They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented" Heb 11:37
Cp. Mark 3:9

lupei (n), "grief, sorrow, distress, suffering"
lupeo (v), "to cause pain, to grieve, to annoy"

"And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of Man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: And they shall kill him... And they were exceeding sorry." Matt. 17:22, 23
"But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions." Matt. 19:22
"And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?" Matt. 26:22
"And he [Jesus] took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me." Matt. 26:37, 38
"... I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy." John 16:20
"But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably." Romans 14:15
"For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you." 2 Cor. 2:4
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope." 1 Thess. 4:13
Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." Heb. 12:11

How To Win Over Depression

8 Steps to Victory

by Diane S. Dew © Copyright 1998

If you exercise the following options every time you get depressed, Satan's onslaughts will not affect you as much -- because he'd rather leave you alone than have you worshipping God, reading the Word of God, ministering to others, etc. Certainly you will grow stronger spiritually in the process, because you'll be exercising your spiritual muscles.
1.  Worship God
Nothing puts everything into perspective like gazing upon the majesty of the Almighty. Make melody to God, or listen to some anointed music: that's what Saul did, when depressed: he called for David, the minstrel, and the anointing on David's music caused the evil spirit that depressed and harassed him to depart. As the psalmist said: "Magnify the Lord." When He is magnified, our perspective changes: Everything else seems smaller, less significant.
2.  Read Scripture
The Word of God is powerful in changing our perspective on earthly things. It comforts us. "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." Rom 15:4 "This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me."  Psa 119:50 "Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?" Psa 119:81, 82
3.  Pray. Express your feelings to God.
Prayer strengthens us (Psa 27:14; 138:3; Isa 30:15) and gives us peace (Phil 4:6, 7; Isa 26:3).
4.  Find a place of service.
"Occupy till I come" (Luke 19:13)  In other words: keep busy. As the saying goes, "Idleness is the devil's workshop." There used to be another old saying that went something like this: "I complained that I didn't have new shoes, till I saw someone with no feet." There's always someone worse off than we are. Focusing on others' needs will keep your eyes off your own problems.
5.  Take control over your thoughts
"Set your affection on things above, not things on the earth" (Col 3:1) Realize that Jesus redeemed us entirely: spirit, soul and body. (Isaiah 53)
6.  Keep filled with the Spirit
"Be filled [literally, be being filled] with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord." (Eph 5:18)
7.  Walk in the Spirit
Don't give the enemy a foothold. Confess any known sin. Avoid places or people that tend to bring you down.
8.  Rest in the Lord
"Rest in the Lord & wait patiently for him" (Psa 37:7). "...and having done all, stand." (Eph 6) Worrying can't change the situation anyway. As the saying goes: "Let go and let God." Trust in His infinite wisdom, that he has everything under control. Even a sparrow doesn't fall to the ground without his notice, Jesus said. The very hairs of your head are numbered.

Depression linked to cancer in elderly
Being chronically depressed for 6 years or more nearly doubles the risk of developing cancer for seniors, according to a report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Dec. 16, 1998.
Why chronically depressed people appear to have a higher risk of cancer is unknown, but one possibility is that depressed individuals have changes in central nervous system activity that interfere with the immune system, says Dr. Richard J. Havlik, of the National Institute on Aging in Bethesda, Md. Other possible explanations include genetic predisposition, smoking, use of antidepressants, alcohol abuse and overeating.
But these findings apply only to elderly people, says Dr. Robert Croyle, of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md.
"It may be that the mechanisms responsible for the relationship between depression and cancer are part of a more complex aging process, producing age-specific vulnerability to disease," Croyle says. "Thus, it would be premature to conclude that adults might reduce their risk of cancer through the treatment of depression."

tarachei (n), "trouble, disorder, confusion"
"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows." Mark 13:8
Cp.  John 5:4

odunao (v), "to cause pain"; "to feel pain" (passive)"

Although we can't depend on others to meet all our emotional needs, friends are a great help.
